To celebrate Memorial Day, here’s an anti-communist funk song from the ’70s, “Go Home, Commie.”

Wreckless Eric - “Brain Thieves”

“In a 1995 interview with Peter Doggett (found on the limited edition Rykodisc release An Overview Disc), former Stiff Records label-mate Elvis Costello mentions that, due to their unusual vocal styles, Stiff had originally envisioned a split LP between himself and Eric, with each artist taking one side of the record.”

I can’t stop listening to this album.

For an entire hour tonight, an adult pop radio station in Athens, GA played two different songs simultaneously. I made a short recording, for posterity.

Try to ignore the one guy that “Woo”s a lot in the background.

Their record just came out, and I highly recommend buying it.

I wasn’t the guy woo-ing.

My Favorite Songs of 2011

Here’s a Spotify playlist of my favorite songs of 2011. I hope you like it.

Many of these songs were released years ago, and many are old favorites that I had apparently forgotten about, only to rediscover them this year. I spent a good portion of the year listening to all of the “1001 Albums,” and many of the selections reflect this project.

Regarding the methodology of composing this list, throughout the year I “starred” songs I found particularly important or interesting in iTunes, and this list is the collective result. I’m sure there are still quite a few songs I missed, and I’m sure more than a few are pretty embarrassing.

I love everything about this album cover.

Last night I saw Unknown Mortal Orchestra at Glasslands. One of the unexpected highlights of the show was the opening act, Hospitality. They write brilliant jazz/pop songs. They just got signed to Merge, so I expect when their LP finally comes out they’ll take over the world.
