This morning I saw someone with Google glasses in public for the first time. He was sitting alone in the back of Gorilla Coffee. He was clearly waiting for someone — anyone — to ask him about his Google glasses. I think he was taking photos of all the people who were looking at him skeptically. Those must be the only kinds of photos he has now. I’ve never seen anyone appear so desperately and fundamentally alone in the world.

I wrote a new essay for Death and Taxes, that’s sort of about New Flickr and the permeability of data:

“What’s interesting to me is how a policy change based on the whims of a company that was bought out by another, larger company that is desperate to restructure itself to appeal to a board of directors and/or fickle tech consumers, can suddenly reveal one’s previously private data to the world. Which requires the user (if they happen to notice the change) to go and delete or hide all of that stuff, or risk harming their Personal Brand.

It’s a small inconvenience, but as far as I can tell, a new one. I’m not sure there’s a neologism for it yet. (Info-pyrognostics? Profile-landscaping? Social-grooming?) I imagine this kind of hassle will only become more prominent as we only add more of ourselves to the digital trash heap.”

According to Vanishing New York, The Blarney Cove is closing. This is disappointing, not because I can claim to be a regular there, but because a frozen yogurt spot or a Chase bank will probably take its place, and there are already enough of those. But Money gets what it wants.

It reminds me of one of the times I went there, with a close friend who had recently been hired at the NY Post. I can’t remember if we were celebrating her career or mourning it. The Blarney Cove was the perfect place for that kind of sentiment. It’s one of those well-worn bars that are sufficiently insulated to contain decades of quiet miseries.

I ordered a whiskey on the rocks. Three sips in I noticed something suspended in the whiskey, underneath the ice. I held the tumbler up to the ceiling light to confirm that it was, in fact, a human toenail. From someone’s big toe. It was fogged with grime, and one of the edges was serrated from where it had been clipped.

I’m not sure how it got there. I consider it one of the great mysteries of the universe. I saw no reason to make a fuss. I gestured to the bartender — yes, there’s a toenail in my drink and yes, could I have another, this time neat?

We had two more rounds and then went to a different bar.
